On leaving Ashville all students automatically become members of the Ashvillian Society. (Members are known as OAs ). Whether you were at Ashville as a student for just a single term or there for the full 11 years all pupils qualify for membership, which is automatic on us receiving your name and address details from the College.
All memberships are equal, and last for life.
In addition the Society offers Honorary Membership to persons not educated at Ashville but who have given outstanding service to the School, the Society, or both.
Membership is also open to members of the teaching or support staff after completion of 5 years service to the School.
Past members of THE FRIENDS OF ASHVILLE can also join the Society once their children have left School, and providing the children have become members of the Society. Fees are exactly as for leavers or any past Ashvillian: Annually £9.00 either paid by standing order or each January on invoice. See below.
Membership for New Leavers
On leaving Ashville students become life members of the Society. Members are generally referred to as OAs (Old Ashvillians).
A fee is retained from the final terms School charge to parents or guardians.
On joining Ashville parents provide a deposit which is returned at the end of the student’s education.
The Society subscription is allocated against that deposit and sent, with the new OAs name and last known address, to the Hon Treasurer in late October.
The Membership secretary then sends out a “Welcome” pack.
This systems means that all leavers automatically receive the Society services, unless their parents write to the Bursar to withdraw from the scheme. A letter explaining this is sent out from the Society in a School mailing in June each year.
If parents do withdraw the New Leaver still remains a life member of the Society, and can re-start services at any time by getting in touch with the membership secretary.
Society services run for 10 years for new leavers from the leaving date. Our newsletter “Update” is posted out several times per year depending on the number of events being held by or for members, for all 10 years. In addition the School magazine, “The Ashvillian” is posted out every December for 5 years.
After the first 10 years
At the end of 10 years members are invited to continue receiving services by means of a single cash payment (usually in 5 yearly pre-payment installments) or by completing an annual Bank Standing Order.
Members not receiving the Newsletter or Magazine may start to do so at any time by making a cash payment, or by completing a Standing Order.
There is no joining fee. OAs simply remit to the Society the appropriate sum, as described below, to receive newsletters, circulars, special member-only offers, the School Magazine, notices of the AGM and full details of other meetings or reunions.
FRIENDS OF ASHVILLE who meet the required conditions (Their children have all left School and have become members of the Society) may join paying the same fees as re-joining Ashvillians. They will automatically be “active” members, and will cease to be members when fees are not paid.
“ACTIVE” and “PASSIVE” membership.
“Active” membership is our way of referring to members (both new leavers and other members) who pay a small fee to receive Society services.
“Passive” members are members who pay no fee, do not receive newsletters, magazines or other items.
Passive members have access to these pages for the latest news, Diary dates, Officers, etc. There is no charge for this.
The new leavers fee, for 10 years services, is currently £60.00. This is the fee collected by School from the last term calculations regarding the original deposit.
Other annual fees
The current fee for the newsletter, per year, is £9.00.
The current fee for the magazine is £6.00
Receiving the regular Update newsletter is therefore £9.00 per year,
The newsletter and magazine (£5.00 extra) is £15.00 per year.
These fees increase from time to time with postage costs and inflation.
A standing order is “fixed” on signature for a minimum of 5 years. This gives a saving by pre-payment.
Cash in advance payments for 5 years are £45.00 (newsletter) or £75.00 including magazine. For cash in advance like this the Society gives 6 years services before renewal, the extra year free being a “thank you”.
Members who do not wish to pay by standing order or cash in advance may pay annually in January each year the sum currently in force for yearly membership – currently £9.00 or £15.00.
Postings are always sent airmail.
The fees are identical to UK fees. There is no extra postage or packing cost as the committee believe that speed of delivery is important.
The Membership Officer’s details are found on the Officers of the Society page.
