18th – 19th October 2014
75 years ago, Ashville College was evacuated to The Hydro Hotel, in Bowness on Windermere. 75 years later, almost 100 Old Ashvillians, including 19 who actually attended the school during its Windermere days, gathered at the Hotel for a weekend celebration.
College staff, including the Headmaster, brought a group of 7 current pupils along, arriving by train and boat, to interview the ‘Windermere Boys’. This was followed by afternoon tea and a chance to look at memorabilia from the time, brought along from both the College archives and the Ashvillians themselves.
The evening was spent enjoying a celebratory Black Tie Dinner night, with speeches from Old Ashvillians, Jeremy Nightingale and Mark Hanson, the President of the Ashvillian Society, Nick Breton, and Mark Lauder, the Headmaster of the College, finished off by a rousing three cheers led by Ian Wilson, one of the Windermere boys.
On Sunday, a service led by Assistant Chaplain, Catherine Frieze, rounded off the weekend celebrations. It was a splendid occasion, a great chance to both reminisce over the past and make new memories to take with us into the future.
