Newly Elected MP To Present Prizes At Former School
A newly-elected Conservative MP and former Harrogate councillor is returning to his old school next month (July) to present prizes at its annual awards ceremony.

Julian Sturdy, who now represents the York Outer constituency – is the guest speaker at Ashville College’s Speech Day, which is being held in the town’s International Centre on Friday, July 2.

Julian, who attended Ashville College from 1981 to 1989, stormed to victory in the recent General Election, winning the hotly-contested new seat with a majority of nearly 3,700.

In 2002, he was one of three Old Ashvillians to be elected to Harrogate Borough Council, representing Marston Moor ward. When he stood down to pursue a Parliamentary career, he was replaced by another OA, Anthony Alton.

His father, Robert, who also attended Ashville, is an MEP for East Anglia.

The MP says of his return to Ashville for its Speech Day: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Ashville and my years there helped shape me into being the person I am today.

“The school’s reputation grows year by year and continues to turn out high-achieving, well-rounded individuals that are ready for the big, wide world.

“I’m honoured to have been asked to be the guest speaker at this year’s Speech Day and only hope that I can inspire the current pupils to go out and achieve what it is they want to achieve in life.”

Ashville College Headmaster Andrew Fleck said: “We are incredibly proud that one of our former pupils has gained a seat in Parliament, particularly such a local and hotly-contested one, and delighted that he has agreed to be the guest of honour and main speaker at this year’s Speech Day.

“We are especially keen to have Old Ashvillians address the pupils, parents and teachers at Speech Day.

Mr Fleck added: “Julian’s duties on the night will be to present the prizes to the winners and also give a talk on his career to date, which I’m sure will be highly motivational for those pupils wishing to pursue their goals in life.”

Julian, a local farmer, was born in Yorkshire in 1971. He is married to Victoria and they have two young children, George and Florence. Julian was brought up and has worked in North Yorkshire all his life, attending Harrogate’s Ashville College and then studying agriculture at Harper Adams University, before running a successful farming and property business with which he is still involved today.

Ashville College Headmaster To Leave School In Summer 2010
Ashville College’s Headmaster, Andrew Fleck, will be leaving at the end of the Summer term 2010, the school has announced today (Friday, June 19).

Mr Fleck joined Ashville in 2003, and over the last six years he has made a significant contribution to the continued success of the 800 pupil-strong co-educational independent school.

Ashville’s chair of governors Peter Holt said: “Andrew has been an outstanding headmaster of Ashville. These days the job of a head is an extremely demanding one. Andrew has managed to draw upon all the different disciplines of teacher, mentor, leader and manager with great skill, understanding and care.

“We now have the difficult task of looking for his replacement, and the search will begin immediately. Being the head of Ashville College is a position to which many will aspire, but one for which only a few will have the right qualifications and qualities needed.

“We thank Andrew for his loyal service and wish him and his family the very best for the future. We also look forward to working with him during the next academic school year.”

Mr Fleck will take over the post of headmaster of Sedbergh School in September 2010.
